Why was God okay with Exodusing thousands of Jews from Egypt, but not okay with saving billions today?

All he needs to do is appear and make some miracles and everyone will become saved believers in God. Sure this will trample all over our free will, but how is this different from all those guys watching ten supernatural plagues unfold before their very eyes? Isn't it worth it? What's stopping him?
