Why is it that I always study later at night but am able to ace tests.?

I am quite the procrastinator when it comes to homework, studying, and the like, but for some reason I almost always ace my history and science tests. Also, I do not study for them very much at all. These are 10th grade college prep. classes. Any ideas would be warmly welcomed.
